A family enjoying meaningful moments together at Heritage Awali Resort in Mauritius.

Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort: A new way of embracing time

Some places invite you to pause. To breathe. To reconnect with what matters. On the raw and beautiful south coast of Mauritius, Heritage Awali is one of these rare destinations where the pace naturally softens. Today, the resort opens a new chapter. A gentle, intentional evolution designed to give space back to comfort, human connection, and Mauritian warmth. Heritage Awali does not seek to reinvent itself. It chooses instead to refine every detail so guests may experience a stay that feels more personal, more attentive, more grounded.

An arrival experience designed to soothe

A guest arriving at Heritage Awali, greeted with a warm Mauritian smile

The journey begins before you even reach your room. The scent of orange and cinnamon, the soft pulse of African percussion, a tamarind juice offered with a genuine smile. The atmosphere becomes an act of hospitality in itself. Arrival is no longer a formality; it becomes a moment. An anchor. An invitation to set down the suitcases and, more importantly, the pace.

Spaces that breathe

A Deluxe Room at Heritage Awali featuring a serene beach view

The subtle refresh of the rooms follows a clear intention: creating an environment where the mind can rest. Light fabrics, natural tones, gentle illumination, each space has been imagined as a quiet retreat, free from excess. To this harmony, the Deluxe Beach View rooms bring an open horizon onto the lagoon, extending the Awali experience through calm and clarity. The Villa Ulundi remains the resort’s most intimate option, enhanced by the signature experience “Ulundi is Yours”, a collection of thoughtful touches that turn a stay into a private escape.

The Spa: The resort’s new signature

A guest enjoying a relaxing spa experience at Heritage Awali

If one place sets the tone for Awali’s new chapter, it is undoubtedly The Heritage Spa & Wellness. Entirely reimagined, it embraces an immersive approach to well-being: open volumes, fluid pathways, open-air couple pavilions, quiet zones, and spaces designed for families. More than a spa, it is a sanctuary; a space where you breathe differently, guided by natural light and essential oils. Each guest builds their own journey: deep relaxation, beauty rituals, shared family experiences, or moments of reconnection.
A vision of wellness that is generous, inclusive, and deeply attentive.

A culinary landscape elevated by talent

A guest enjoying Mauritian flavours at the Kizuri Corner at Heritage Awali

Awali’s evolution also unfolds through its culinary offering. With the arrival of Executive Chef Veerapen Govinden, the resort strengthens a gastronomic identity shaped by precision, Mediterranean finesse, and inspirations from the Mauritian terroir. The new Kizuri corner introduces the comforting flavours of Mauritian street-food, while Zafarani deepens the essence of Indian cuisine under the expertise of Chef Sobat Singh Negi. Across the wider Bel Ombre estate, culinary diversity remains one of the group’s strongest assets: thirteen restaurants, year-round themed dinners, and an intimate wine experience brought to life through “Whispers of the Cellar”.

A kids club rooted in Mauritian culture

Discover mauritian culture at the Timomo Kids Club, Heritage Awali

The evolution naturally includes younger travellers. The Timomo Kids Club now embraces a livelier, more local identity thanks to a colourful mural by Guillaume St Flour, inspired by the beloved Mauritian character Tikoulou. Discovery, nature and imagination continue beyond the club through the Yellow Submarine initiative, led by the Heritage Marine Education Centre and Reef Conservation, raising awareness about the fragility of the island’s marine ecosystems. At Heritage Awali, family wonder and cultural transmission are part of the experience.

Moments you don’t plan, but remember

Boma Restaurant at Heritage Awali, showcasing elegant dining and Mauritian hospitality

What stays with guests at Awali often isn’t what they expected:
A dinner with feet in the sand.
A sunset at La Réserve Golf Links.
A conversation around the Boma’s fire.
A round of golf or a guided hike at Le Morne with the Umuzi Activity Centre.

These are the moments that shape a memorable stay.

An evolution guided by sustainability

Sustainable practices at Heritage Awali Resort

This new chapter aligns naturally with Now for Tomorrow, the group’s sustainability programme.
Here in Bel Ombre, a territory listed under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere programme, impact is reflected in daily actions: responsible purchasing, waste reduction, support for local communities, and protection of natural ecosystems. Today, hospitality is increasingly defined by responsibility and generosity. Awali embraces this wholeheartedly.

A new step, the same warm soul

Guests at Heritage Awali Golf & Spa Resort in Mauritius

Heritage Awali remains a place where guests feel welcomed, embraced, recognised.
A resort built on sincerity, hospitality, and time rediscovered, rather than abundance or spectacle. This new chapter is not a departure. It is the continuation of a way of life. An art of caring, with intention.

Audrey Fleurot at Heritage Le Telfair

Q&A : Audrey Fleurot on Her Stay at Heritage Le Telfair

A celebrated figure in French cinema and television, Audrey Fleurot recently enjoyed a stay at Heritage Le Telfair, located on the southern coast of Mauritius. Through this Q&A, she shares the highlights of her getaway, her impressions of the resort, and how this magical break helped recharge her energy and creativity.

What inspired you to visit Mauritius and Heritage Le Telfair?

Aerial view of Heritage Le Telfair in Mauritius

Mauritius is truly paradise on Earth. There are so many incredibly appealing things about it. Personally, I rarely get more than a week off at a time, so when time is short and the grey skies weigh heavy especially in northern France where I spend a lot of time, Mauritius becomes an obvious choice. It’s the perfect remedy for a lack of sunshine, sleep, and joy.

This trip also allowed me to reconnect with my son, since I’m often away. We shared precious moments in a stunning setting. It’s an intense burst of happiness, with minimal jet lag, which is a luxury. That sense of escape, the sunshine, the exotic atmosphere it’s exactly what you need when life gets hectic. We work a lot, we’re constantly on the move, and we don’t always have time to connect with our loved ones. This stay was a magical bubble, a little paradise where joyful memories are made.

Your favorite moment with us?

Relaxing spa interior at Heritage Le Telfair

Every day brought memorable moments, and that’s what made the experience so special. The massages were incredible especially when my son happily went to the kids club! The sunsets, the walks in the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve… You can choose to relax or explore, depending on your mood.

What’s wonderful is that everyone can enjoy the kind of holiday they want. I came with my best friend, who’s passionate about golf, and he was thrilled. I even tried a golf initiation yesterday and totally understood the obsession with the perfect swing! It was amazing. I don’t have time to fully dive into it right now, but I wouldn’t rule it out for the future.

A recent role or collaboration that left a mark on you?

Every film is an adventure, and that’s what I love. I recently shot a film that really moved me, directed by Emmanuel Poulain-Arnaud with Dany Boon. It’s not a comedy, which is quite unusual for both of us. We play a separated couple whose 17-year-old son learns he will lose his sight in two months. The film explores what we choose to show him of the world before he can no longer see it. It’s a beautiful piece, and I’m very proud of it.

How do breaks like this influence your upcoming projects?

Audrey Fleurot outdoors in Mauritius, taking a relaxing moment to recharge

It’s mainly a reset. I just finished filming the first four episodes of the final season of HPI, and in a week I’ll start a feature film. This trip was a real decompression chamber. Shoots are intense, the schedules are crazy, and by the end, I’m completely drained.

This kind of break helps you come down before taking off again. I have a lot of energy, but it’s important not to feel like you’re constantly in a race. To create or at least to start a new adventure with the freshness it requires—you need to breathe. And when time is short, Mauritius is perfect.

Is it important for you to support responsible initiatives in your personal and professional life?

Coral reef in Mauritius affected by damage, promoting awareness for responsible tourism

For an island like Mauritius, which holds this natural treasure and relies on tourism, protecting the reefs is vital. Paradise is fragile. With the influx of visitors, building new hotels can be destructive. Staying in a place like Heritage Le Telfair, which embraces eco-tourism and actively works to protect the reefs, is very important to me.

If you were to shoot a film in Mauritius, what kind of story would you tell?

Le Château de Bel Ombre exterior, showcasing historical architecture and heritage in Mauritius

I’d create a grand historical saga. Mauritius has a rich and little-known history, shaped by several waves of colonization that gave it its unique identity. The fact that people speak French, English… And dining at the Château de Bel Ombre, you feel the weight of history. You want to tell the story of the families, the plantations. A multi-generational saga that shows Mauritius is more than just an island surrounded by five-star hotels.

Three words to describe your stay at Heritage Le Telfair?

Elegant interior design and architecture of Heritage Le Telfair resort

Joy, authenticity thanks to the beautiful wooden architecture and immersion in nature and escape, because it’s a magical break. Living here is something else, but for us visitors, it’s a wonderful bubble that helps us navigate our lives, both amazing and absurd.

And finally, Mauritius in one sentence?

Scenic view of Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Mauritius

It’s a true gem. Last time, I even visited villas for sale… But then I thought: no, I’ll just keep coming back for these beautiful little escapes.

Art as a playground

Sapna at the Timomo Kids Club

At the Timomo Kids Club of Heritage Le Telfair, Local artist Sapna brings colour to the kids’ world with vibrant murals and engaging workshops. From painting to collage, she encourages young creatives to express themselves while celebrating Mauritian culture through art.

Over at Heritage Awali, another artistic gem adorns the Kids Club walls: a lively mural by Guillaume St Flour, a rising local talent. His artwork pays tribute to Mauritian childhood by featuring Tikoulou, the beloved character who has captured the hearts of generations. Full of colour and life, this mural adds a touch of tenderness and local pride to the space, turning it into a canvas of shared stories and joyful memories.

At Heritage Resorts, kids don’t just have fun they flourish. Through carefully curated activities that blend joy with purpose, we create unforgettable family holidays rooted in culture, nature, and connection.

Let the adventure begin.

Novelist David Foenkinos rediscovers Mauritius during his stay at Heritage Le Telfair

David Foenkinos, French novelist, playwright, and filmmaker, recently stayed at Heritage Le Telfair. His return to Mauritius, a place he hadn’t seen in forty years, was filled with emotion and childhood memories. In this exchange, he shares his impressions of the island’s beauty, its human richness, and the inspiration he drew from his time there.

What does this return to Mauritius mean to you?

“It’s extremely emotional, and even quite unsettling, because my father used to work in Mauritius when I was a child. So I came here many, many times when I was about 7 or 8 years old, in the early 1980s. I always had the dream, the fantasy, of coming back to Mauritius.

My father was in charge of the airport control tower. He lived here, and since my mother worked in France and we didn’t have to pay for flights, we visited him regularly.

So I experienced Mauritius in the 80s. He had lots of Mauritian colleagues, a house… We really saw Mauritian life. It left a deep impression on me. For a little Parisian boy, discovering life in Mauritius was very powerful.

And I had never returned.

I was invited to give talks at a literary event in Réunion, for a festival. I accepted the invitation thinking: this is my chance to return to Mauritius.

That’s how it happened. It’s my comeback after 40 years.”

How was your stay at Heritage Le Telfair?

Aerial view of Heritage Le Telfair resort

“I’m here with my daughter, so we’re clearly on holiday.
We had several experiences, including an excursion to the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve. It was very powerful—seeing wild nature, the beauty of the landscapes.”

Does the island inspire your writing?

“Definitely, it’s an inspiring island. Even just driving from the airport and crossing the island, you see temples, chapels… This mix of cultures, this richness, is very powerful.
I wondered whether what I had known as a child had disappeared with tourism. But you can feel that Mauritian life is still very present, very strong.

Just this morning, we spoke with the people on the boat. They told us about life here.
So yes, it’s an island that could inspire me. But it’s not necessarily the scenery that inspires me—it’s the human stories, the people I meet.”

What do you appreciate most here?

“There’s never any noise here. And I love that. True rest is silence. The sound of the sea is enough.
For me, this calm, this atmosphere—that’s what’s truly restful.”

Three words to sum up your stay?

If you ask me for three words to sum up my stay… I’d say: desire to return.”..

A Unique Way to Experience 5-Star Hotels in Mauritius

Some hotels in Mauritius impress you with chandeliers, mosaics and touches of green, others make you feel at ease the moment you step inside. At Heritage Resorts, those first impressions are only the beginning. Here, the setting, the service and the smallest of details work together to create an experience that feels complete from the very first day.

The way everything connects makes a 5-star stay memorable. It’s all about the comfort of your suite, the attentiveness of the team, the flavours on your plate and the spaces that invite you to slow down all play their part. In the sections ahead, we explore what makes staying at a 5-star hotel in Mauritius so remarkable and how Heritage Resorts brings its own signature to each of these moments.

Exceptional Service that Sets the Best Hotels in Mauritius Apart

Service is often the quiet measure of a 5-star hotel’s worth. It might be the glass of water that appears before you even think to ask, or the way a familiar smile greets you each morning. In Mauritius, service often comes with a warmth that feels unforced as much a part of the island as the sound of the waves or the scent of frangipani in the air.

At Heritage Resorts, that spirit is carried further, shaped into something distinctly its own. Here, it’s not only about meeting needs but anticipating the small things that make a stay memorable. The concierge might secure a last-minute table at a popular restaurant, arrange a private golf session, or recommend a little-known spot for sunset. Housekeeping quietly notes how you take your tea or the hour you prefer your suite refreshed. These thoughtful gestures that make you feel less like a guest and more like someone the team has been expecting.

Prime Locations for 5-Star Holidays in Mauritius

Elegant entrance hall of the Château de Bel Ombre, featuring a beautiful floral arrangement

The finest luxury resort in Mauritius are always set in places that feel naturally special. They are usually surrounded by landscapes that inspire and views that last a lifetime. Heritage Resorts rests in Bel Ombre, a serene corner of the south coast, with the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve almost on its doorstep.

Within the resort grounds, manicured gardens overflow with tropical flowers, offering colour and fragrance at every turn. Stately trees line winding paths, leading you towards the historic Château de Bel Ombre, a 19th-century manor that now hosts fine dining and elegant events. Beyond the gates, green hills slope gently towards the lagoon and the coral reef keeps the waters calm and inviting. It’s a setting where nature, heritage and comfort come together with ease.

Privacy and Peace in Luxury Hotels

In the best 5-star resorts, privacy isn’t an afterthought, it’s part of the design. At Heritage Resorts, you can slip away to a peaceful terrace, read under the shade of a frangipani tree, or watch the shoreline from a lounger without anyone nearby. Some suites are reserved for adults, giving couples a calm space to unwind, while private dining can turn a beach, balcony or garden corner into your own restaurant for the night.

The grounds are wide and open, so even when the resort feels alive with activity, there’s always a place to pause. A turn down a path might lead you to an empty bench facing the lagoon or a stretch of sand where the only sound is the sea. Here, peace comes naturally and it’s yours to find whenever you want it.

Holidays to Mauritius: 7 Places Off the Beaten Path You Shouldn’t Miss

Planning your holidays to Mauritius? Chances are, you’ve been searching for the best places to visit on this incredible island. Beyond the usual beaches and markets, there’s a side of Mauritius many visitors never see. Quiet coves where locals picnic on Sundays, tiny waterfalls hidden in the forest and islands with stories older than the resorts themselves. If you’re curious to explore deeper, here are seven places most tourists miss, but perhaps you shouldn’t.

Savinia Beach

Picnic basket and wine glasses set on at Savinia Beach, creating a relaxing seaside dining atmosphere

When people talk about holidays to Mauritius, they often imagine busy beaches lined with umbrellas, but here it’s different. Surrounded by sugar cane fields, Savinia Beach is a place where time slows down. Discreet, quiet and well hidden, this spot is known to few. There are no sun loungers or water sports kiosks. This beach is made up of long stretches of sand. Those who know the area come here to recharge their batteries, admire the view and enjoy a small natural pool with incredibly clear water. Others come with friends or families to enjoy a quiet day out, savouring home-cooked food, avoiding their screens and getting closer to nature. If you visit the island, bring your sandals and let the tide caress your ankles as you walk. It’s simple, it’s peaceful and breathtaking.

Location: L’escalier, Grand Port District

Difficulty: Depending on your route, you might find yourself climbing over rocks or following uneven paths.

Minissy Waterfall

A scenic view of the Mauritius Minissy waterfall, surrounded by vibrant green trees

Image source: Saleem A Sam, via Explora Mauritius

If you’ve ever had the impression that waterfalls in travel guides look suspiciously similar, Minissy Waterfall might change your mind. Located in the centre of the island, this unfamiliar waterfall requires a short hike to reach, but that’s half the reward. The path cuts through dense vegetation before revealing the falls themselves: modest in size, but magnificent in sound. If you’re lucky, you’ll have them all to yourself. Take the time to sit on the rocks secretly warmed by the sun and let the water spray cool your skin. As we move beyond forest pools, let’s step into one of Mauritius’ quiet coastal villages next.

Location: Moka

Difficulty: Medium

Disclaimer: It’s best to stay close to the shore where the water stays shallow. You can also hire a guide to advise you.

When most people plan their holidays to Mauritius, places like Bois des Amourettes rarely make the itinerary. Yet this tiny village, nestled between Lion Mountain and Grand-Port Bay, shows you a side of the island few visitors see. The name itself raises questions. Was this really a meeting place for secret lovers, as some say? Or does it simply take its name from the Amourette trees that once filled the village? Either way, life here is peaceful. People live close to the sea and to each other, sharing stories on doorsteps as fishing boats bob offshore. Walk to the end of the wooden jetty and gaze out at the quiet horizon. If you’re after a slower pace during your holidays to Mauritius, this might be your favourite stop.

Most visitors to Mauritius stick to the main island, but just offshore lies Île de la Passe, a small island packed with history. Used as a fort during the 19th-century naval battles, its crumbling walls now stand silent among sea birds and wild plants. You’ll need to hire a boat from Mahébourg to get there, but exploring its quiet ruins gives you a rare glimpse into the island’s past. Standing here, with waves lapping at old stone steps, you can almost hear the echoes of cannons and sails.

Mare Aux Joncs is a small, quiet pond located deep in the southern hills of Mauritius, reached by a straightforward forest trail starting from the Riviere Noire entrance of Black River Gorges National Park. The walk takes about 45 minutes, crossing a river several times and following a clear, shaded path. Along the way, you’ll pass through stretches of native forest and walk beside a creek that stays close to the trail. At the pond, you’ll find a calm pool where local birds perch among the trees. There are no facilities here, just space to sit, read or enjoy the silence. It’s a simple but rewarding stop for anyone looking for a quieter side of the park. After soaking in nature, let’s return to culture with a visit to Mauritius’s living history.

Domaine des Aubineaux

For travellers looking to add a touch of history to their holidays to Mauritius, Domaine des Aubineaux offers a quiet change of pace. This colonial-era house feels like stepping into another time. Walk through rooms filled with creaking floorboards and old photographs, then explore the gardens where tea leaves dry in the sun. Afterwards, settle in the old tea room for a pot of fresh local brew paired with homemade cakes. You won’t find beaches here, but you will find stories and perhaps a new favourite spot for afternoon tea. As we approach the end of our journey, let’s discover one last hidden beach beloved by locals.

Pointe d’Esny

Holidays to Mauritius often involve finding the perfect beach. For many locals, that beach is Pointe d’Esny. Not because it’s famous, but because it isn’t. This stretch of coast near Mahébourg feels more like a quiet village shore than a tourist hotspot. You won’t find hotel bars or sunloungers here, just small holiday homes, fishing boats and water so clear you can count the shells under your feet. Swim, snorkel or simply drift. At Pointe d’Esny, there’s nothing to rush for. It’s the kind of place where Mauritius lets its natural beauty speak quietly for itself.

Why the Quiet Places Matter on Your Holidays to Mauritius

A man walks up a jungle trail in Mauritius, surrounded by lush greenery and hidden waterfalls.

Planning your holidays to Mauritius means choosing where to spend your days. While popular spots have their place, some of the island’s most memorable moments happen in the places few people mention. A quiet jetty in a fishing village. A waterfall hidden behind forest paths. A beach without sunbeds, but full of local life. So, if you’re ready to see a different side of Mauritius, step off the usual path. You might just find your favourite place isn’t in the guidebooks at all.

Quiet Spaces to Recharge During Your Golf Holiday

Some afternoons are best kept simple. A lounger in the shade, something cold in hand and no need to check the time. The adults-only pool at Heritage Awali offers exactly that: quiet corners, attentive service and a sense that this part of your day is entirely your own. Just beyond, the beach stretches out with soft sand and calm water. It’s easy to spend hours here, doing very little and enjoying every second of it. Outdoor Activities and Water Sports in Mauritius

Yoga session by the beach

If stillness isn’t your style, there’s plenty to keep you moving. Try paddling out on a kayak, gliding across the lagoon in an electric boat or snorkelling along the shoreline where reef fish appear just beneath the surface.

On land, mornings often begin with yoga by the beach or a quiet session in the gym. Group classes, guided sessions or solo stretches, there’s space for it all. These moments bring a welcome rhythm to your day. You might start fresh before a round or wind down once it’s done. Golf holidays in Mauritius aren’t only about the fairways, they’re also about how you enjoy the time between games.

Dining & Entertainment that’s Included

Enjoy a breakfast on the beach

Mauritius takes food seriously and so does Heritage Awali. Here, the Mauritius dishes are part of the pleasure. Mornings begin with the scent of fresh bread, tropical fruit and the soft clink of cutlery under open skies. By lunchtime, you’ve got choices, perhaps grilled fish at Infinity Blue, a casual plate at the Golf Club or something light and easy by the pool.

Evenings are when the resort really comes to life. Music drifts from the bar, sometimes soft and acoustic, sometimes bold enough to get feet tapping. You’ll find tables set beneath palms, menus that shift from Indian spices to local favourites. Wherever you are, the drinks keep pace: rum on the rocks, chilled rosé, or just a fresh coconut in hand.
