Bel Ombre, Mauritius – This December, Heritage Resorts & Golf will mark 20 years of success and excellence in the luxury hospitality sector in Mauritius. Since its opening in December 2004, the five-star brand has redefined the high-end resort experience on the southwest coast of Mauritius, featuring three luxury resorts and two championship golf courses. Deeply rooted in Mauritian culture and traditions, Heritage Resorts & Golf has provided memorable experiences to over 500,000 guests over the past two decades and continues to look forward to the future with a strong commitment to responsible and sustainable practices in the picturesque setting of Bel Ombre.
Heritage Resorts & Golf kicked off its journey with the opening of its first two resorts: Heritage Awali and Heritage Le Telfair. Located on a former sugar cane field in Bel Ombre, these five-star hotels marked the start of an ambitious journey to create memorable experiences in one of Mauritius’s most pristine areas. The grand opening event, held in December 2004, featured a spectacular fireworks display and marked the beginning of a successful and passionate story.
Over the years, Heritage Resorts & Golf has developed and diversified its portfolio to provide a comprehensive range of experiences for golf and culinary enthusiasts, among others. In 2005, the Château Golf Course, which has since been named the Best Golf Course in the Indian Ocean nine times, opened its doors, offering golfers an exceptional course within the comfort of a resort. In 2007, the 19th-century colonial mansion, Le Château de Bel Ombre, was converted into a gastronomic restaurant, offering refined local cuisine crafted by the resort’s talented chefs.
A GRAND PLAYGROUND
The launch of a collection of rental villas (Heritage The Villas) in 2010 marked the beginning of a new era, followed by the opening of the C Beach Club in 2011, which enhanced the overall visitor experience. The introduction of La Réserve Golf Links in 2023, the only links course in the Indian Ocean and Africa’s first golf course to be awarded GEO Certified® Development Status, provided another opportunity for the brand to showcase its commitment to innovation and exceptional guest experiences. This new golf course, the most recent in Mauritius, will celebrate its first anniversary in December.
“The success of Heritage Resorts & Golf reflects our ability to offer tailored service and a vast playground with the 2,500 hectares of the Domaine de Bel Ombre. We embrace Mauritian culture, aiming to showcase the beauty of our identity through our cuisine, for example,” explains Raoul Maurel, Chief Operations Officer of Heritage Resorts & Golf. “Our goal is to create a space where every visitor, whether staying for a week or longer, can experience something exceptional. We focus on the art of living, offering not just a stay but a true lifestyle. As we approach our 20th anniversary, we are proud to have met the diverse needs of our guests with a personalised approach. This dynamic will continue to be at the heart of our expertise as we move forward.” A 100% Mauritian brand, Heritage Resorts & Golf is driven by the desire to create exceptional experiences, guided by the brand promise of offering memorable stays inspired by nature. Each property offers a distinct but consistent experience based on the five pillars of the brand: gastronomy, wellness, golf, sustainability, and service. In the heart of the Domaine de Bel Ombre, the brand provides a tropical lifestyle with attentive and personalized service, highlighting the legendary Mauritian hospitality centred on the individual.
It’s no surprise that Heritage Le Telfair has upheld its reputation as an exclusive luxury resort, renowned for its minimalist design, elegant architecture, and discreet yet exceptional service. It is a proud member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Its neighbour, Heritage Awali, has successfully solidified its position as a premium all-inclusive resort over 20 years. Renovated in 2020, it was awarded the Best Five-Star All-Inclusive Resort on the island at the Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2023. Both resorts proudly hold a Green Key certification, reflecting their controlled carbon footprint and commitment to sustainability.
THE TOURISM OF TOMORROW
Deeply committed to a forward-looking vision of tourism characterized by inclusion and sustainability, Heritage Resorts & Golf is rolling out its “Now for Tomorrow” sustainability program as part of its strategy to better prepare for the future. The brand envisions tomorrow’s tourism as an inclusive and sustainable experience. Its vision is not only to offer exceptional stays but also to push the boundaries of sustainable hospitality, inspiring both clients and the wider industry.
“We firmly believe that our approach to sustainability is key to creating a truly exceptional and meaningful hospitality experience. Our Now for Tomorrow program structures our sustainability strategy around six key impact areas, allowing us to go beyond legal compliance and aim for real positive transformation,” says Axelle Mazery, Chief Brand & Communication Officer and Sustainability Leader at Rogers Hospitality.
Heritage Resorts & Golf aims to stay at the forefront of responsible and luxurious tourism, protecting the Mauritian legacy while providing memorable experiences: “Our long-term goal is to further strengthen our ties with the local community and involve our guests in our sustainability efforts. We aim for every visitor to become an ambassador for our vision, actively supporting our ecological and community initiatives.”
As part of its sustainability strategy for the coming years, Heritage Resorts & Golf is working to offset its residual CO2 emissions by investing in local carbon capture and sequestration projects. At the same time, to reduce its energy consumption and reliance on fossil fuels, the brand will establish two photovoltaic farms, each with a capacity of 2 MW.
These initiatives build on the significant advancements made by Heritage Resorts & Golf in sustainability in recent years. Since October 1, 2021, the company has offset 100% of the unavoidable carbon emissions related to guest stays at its hotels. It has also implemented efficient systems to measure, manage, and reduce pollutants and waste and actively partners with innovative entrepreneurs to develop solutions addressing ecological and community challenges, such as reducing plastic use.
