Welcome to Ganga Talao
The high place of pilgrimage is the most emblematic Hindu place of worship on the Island. According to Legend, its small volcanic lake is connected to the waters of the Ganges in India. The Hindus of Mauritius go there to pray, meditate and make offerings.
An unusual place
Devotees and visitors keep company with the monkeys for an offering around the temples and statues of deities. The most spectacular is that of Shiva with its 80m height! The surrounding lake's water is considered sacred. It is used by the devotees to purify themselves and infuse the energy of Shiva, one of the three main gods of Hinduism.
Maha Shivratree
You might just get to see and experience this important Hindu pilgrimage. Dressed in white and carrying wooden structures, thousands of Mauritians and foreigners walk miles to the lake to collect water, sharing in singing and conviviality, a unique spiritual journey!
