A little paradise
Classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO, Le Morne is an impressive mountain at 555 metres altitude in the South-West of Mauritius. With cliffs that plunge down to a magnificent beach with an incredible panoramic view, Le Morne is one of the most iconic spots in Mauritius.
A bit of history
During the XVIII century, the mountain was a refuge for runaway slaves. Protected by the forest, the escapees took refuge in the caves and on top of Le Morne Brabant mountain. This mountain is now a symbol of their fight for freedom and resilience against the harsh conditions imposed by French and British colonial powers. The name "Le Morne," which translates to "the mournful one" in French, reflects the suffering endured by the escaped slaves.
In 2008, Le Morne Brabant was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, acknowledging its profound cultural and historical significance. The site commemorates the tragic legend of the maroons, who leaped to their deaths from the summit, mistakenly believing they were about to be recaptured. Today, Le Morne Brabant stands not only as a poignant reminder of Mauritius’ complex past but also as a cultural landmark where annual events honour the legacy of those who fought for freedom and celebrate the island’s diverse heritage.
For thrill-seekers
The surrounding turquoise lagoon is one of the world's most famous kitesurf and windsurf spots, the perfect playground for water sports. You can also reach the top of the mountain by hiking or trekking and take in the breathtaking panoramic view.
An Iconic Water Sports Playground
Le Morne is renowned as one of the world’s best spots for kitesurfing, thanks to its unique geography, steady trade winds, and protected lagoons. The area offers excellent conditions for both beginners and advanced kitesurfers, with flat, shallow waters near the shore and challenging reef breaks farther out. Besides kitesurfing, Le Morne is ideal for windsurfing, paddleboarding, and sailing. The consistent winds and clear waters make it a perfect destination for these activities. The best time to visit for wind and water sports is during the winter months from May to October, when the southeast trade winds are strongest, averaging 15 to 25 knots. This period provides optimal conditions for all levels of enthusiasts.
Hiking Trails at Le Morne
Le Morne Brabant offers some of the most scenic hiking trails in Mauritius. The main trail to the summit provides stunning views of the island and the Indian Ocean. The hike is moderately challenging, taking about three to four hours round trip. The path winds through green vegetation and becomes steeper and rockier towards the top, requiring careful navigation. For a safer and more informative experience, guided tours are recommended, offering both historical context and assistance throughout the hike.
