The Yoga of Sound will surprise you

From November 8th to 15th 2014, Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Spa Resort invites you to come and discover an unusual practice called the Yoga of Sound. Shivala will introduce you to vocal techniques and sacred chants known for their spiritual and therapeutic benefits. Let the music play!

YOGA DOES RING A BELL BUT YOGA OF SOUND?

Yoga, especially Hatha Yoga, is probably the best known yoga practice in Western countries and it continues to attract more and more fans worldwide. Even if we can get an idea of what the Yoga of Sound is, it “sounds” good to have a closer look at it.
Unlike Hatha Yoga, the Yoga of Sound does not require any posture but focuses on voice and sound techniques. It is through the Harmonic Chant (vocals through vowel modulations that stimulate all the cells of the body and the energy that resonates through the whole body) and the recitation of mantras whether from Hinduism, Taoism or Buddhism traditions (or any other religious and spiritual beliefs), that we practise the Yoga of Sound.
This spiritual and therapeutic exercise allow, through vibrations generated by the Harmonic Chant, to balance energies that flow through our body. In Eastern countries, chants with harmonics are recognised as an incarnation of Buddha’s speech, and therefore would have unique healing and spiritual benefits. On the scientist side, specialists in neurophysiology study and use treatments with sounds full of harmonics.

Shivala - a modern Dhrupad expert
Shivala – a modern Dhrupad expert

SHIVALA, MUSIC BY BIRTH
Shivala started composing music with her guitar at a very young age. Then, she did a course in Jazz music and studied various instruments in several conservatories in France… As she immersed herself in the world of music at a young age she realised the deep impact that music could have on the body, mind and emotions.
Shivala discovered the magical combination of music and spirituality during an intense course about Vedic music with the spiritual master Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. She discovered the authentic Indian classical music, learned to play the sitar, studied the Khayal singing in the United States and learned the Dhrupad, the ancient Indian music, which is now her favourite instrument.

Monday 10th November: Mini Workshop – Yoga of Sound, breathing and vocal techniques
This workshop is highly effective and accessible to all. The aim is to strengthen the vocal cords through vocal and breathing exercises as well as stabilising and placing the voice. This technique will help you regaining self-confidence when it comes to express yourself at work, in society or in a more intimate circle. You will be better heard and respected.

Wednesday 12th November: Mini Workshop – Yoga of Sound based on the 5 elements
The body is composed of five elements and each corresponds to a sound. These sounds, by making them resonating in every part of the body, are used to re-harmonise the body, mind and emotions. This is a very powerful technique, a remedy for physical, emotional, mental and energy imbalances. This workshop will be very helpful for people who travel a lot, have a very active and stressful social life.

Saturday, 15th November: Big Workshop – Yoga of Sound based on the harmonies of Nature
This big workshop is accessible to all even if you don’t have any musical knowledge. It revolves around the practice of the musical and rhythmic art of Dhrupad, which ultimate goal is to create harmony within oneself and the environment. Participants will learn to sing different parts of a raga, including a traditional composition, specific rhythmic sequences and how to improvise with the Dhrupad.
