La Réserve Golf Links Leads The Way For Sustainable Golf In Africa

Heritage Golf Club is celebrating an important milestone as La Réserve Golf Links becomes the first golf course in the African region to achieve GEO Certified® Development status. This prestigious designation recognises golf developments that exemplify sustainability by promoting nature, enhancing local ecosystems, conserving resources and supporting communities.

Opening in December 2023 and immediately hosting the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, won by course co-designer Louis Oosthuizen, La Réserve Golf Links is inspired by the rugged beauty of the world’s greatest seaside links courses. With breathtaking ocean views from every hole, it is the Indian Ocean’s first and only contemporary links-style layout.

“It took vision, time and determination to bring this project to fruition,” said Thierry Montocchio, CEO of Rogers Hospitality, which owns Heritage Golf Club. “We were fortunate to work with passionate people who understood the importance of working in harmony with the land, nature and the environment.”

The course is the result of an ambitious restoration project that transformed 104 hectares of sugar cane monoculture into a rich mosaic of native grasslands and habitats covering 65 hectares. Using local natural resources, the design takes full advantage of the sloping terrain to minimise irrigation requirements through an efficient gravity-fed system.

Sam Thomas, Director of Development for the GEO Sustainable Golf Foundation, praised the “vision and hard work” that enabled La Réserve to achieve GEO Certified Development status. “The success of the golf course is a testament to the efforts of the entire team in restoring the former sugar cane fields to a native grassland environment.”

At Heritage Golf Club, we are committed to sustainable practices that reduce our environmental footprint. La Réserve Golf Links embodies this mission as the Indian Ocean’s first eco-friendly links course within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. We invite you to experience this exciting new links layout that proves golf and nature can coexist in perfect harmony.
