There is no better time than the International Ocean Day, which is celebrated on June 8th, to explain how important it is to preserve Bel Ombre’s lagoon and how Heritage Resorts and other seaside resorts have joined forces to do so.
A rich and healthy lagoon
Human pressures have a significant impact on the natural landscape as revealed in a study commissioned by hotels in the lagoon of Bel Ombre and carried out by Reef Conservation. In fact, most critical damages on the site are actually due to human activity: power boats, snorkeling, stepping on the corals… The most affected areas are located near the shore and around boat traffic areas.
Despite such observations, researchers have concluded that it is yet a wholesome lagoon and the best-preserved in Mauritius. During their research, they have identified major habitats, including: four coral sites in various parts of the lagoon; 20 hectares of sea grass bed located on the mouth of Rivière Citronniers; a great diversity of fish (up to 70 species); and a high percentage of live coral. It is a rich ecosystem, which is not that much affected but still needs to be looked after so it can live on and thrives.
While it is important to appreciate Bel Ombre’s marine wealth, understanding the importance of the ocean is even more crucial. Actually, oceans provide a great number of elements that are essential to life on Earth: food, medicine, climate regulation, air and water quality, oxygen, etc. Unfortunately, climate change and human pressures of various types are a serious threat for our oceans. Scientists even talk about a “seventh continent” or “trash vortex” about six times the size of France in the North of the Pacific Ocean.
Ecotourism
Fully aware of the beauty of the site and the importance of preserving it, Heritage Resorts and other hotels in the region agreed with Reef Conservation to an action plan for a better management of the lagoon. While hotel staff and boat operators will be alerted and educated on the matter, new standards on the use of the lagoon will be established. Such measures will range from speed use only in emergency cases and a delimited speed zone to snorkeling permission at high tide only and removal of waterskiing from the hotels’ list of activities. A handbook on the lagoon will be distributed in all hotel rooms to raise guests’ awareness.
Such an approach will not only help you reduce your environmental footprint during your holidays in Mauritius, but will also allow to enjoy a rich and sound environment. You will be able to lie on the beach in total serenity, without being disturbed by the sound of boat engines, and swim in all safety thanks to the delimited speed zones and other measures. And with the creation of sea trails in the various coral patches, you will be able to explore undersea wonders without wounding yourself or the corals.
In love with the ocean? The Château de Bel Ombre is now home to a seashell Museum. Visits are free for Heritage Resorts’ residents.
